The Soldier’s Tale (1918) was the first piece of the neoclassical period of the Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky, who later emigrated to the United States, and is perhaps the first multi-art piece born at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The chamber opera composed for three branches of the arts – theatre, music and dance – is based upon the story of the wandering soldier and the devil, and provides an excellent opportunity to create a multidisciplinary artwork.

PR-Evolution Dance Company, Zsófia Nemes’s grotesque dance theatre, now stages the piece following a Faustian theme with the involvement of Dávid Dinya’s Divisi Chamber Orchestra, which uses 7 instruments, and actor Attila Bardóczy.

Using elements of Russian folk stories, The Soldier’s Tale was written by the poet Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz and the composer Stravinsky for their small touring theatre company to present the musical, lyrical and dance tale in different cities. In the story, the soldier who sells his soul to the devil fights a desperate struggle to break free from evil. Exciting and startling twists lead to the end of this bitterly ironic tale.
